Nishita - another Free Photo Blog Wordpress Theme

A simple, sleek and minimal (quick and simple install/setup) Photo Blog theme for Wordpress - Nishita. Nishita came to my mind as I felt the need of a simple Photo blog to highlight some of the selected photographs from on my Flickr Photos.

I have a bunch of Photos on Flickr. Even though, I was beta testing Flickr ever since it came up and had a pro account gifted by them along with another 2 to be given away to friend, I really never used it for my photos. I moved to Flickr from my own Gallery hosted Photo Section (I lost all the photo comments eventually), somewhere late February, 2006. Since then online Photo Management and storage have become a pleasant experience for me and coupla days back, my photo collection hit 50,000 views (as seen on my Flickr Page).

To commemorate the nice things happening around, I would like to contribute another small offering for the public to use. A simple, sleek and minimal (quick and simple install/setup) Photo Blog theme for Wordpress - Nishita. Nishita came to my mind as I felt the need of a simple Photo blog to highlight some of the selected photographs from on my Flickr Account.

The initial offering is bare bone, and somewhat true to my philosophy - simple. I’ll, if my need arises, try to improve on it and fulfill my current wishlist -

  • ability to post Flickr Photos directly, so I don’t have to worry about them to be on my server or not
  • include other services - Photobucket, Shutterfly, 23hq et al
  • clone this to be able to post videos too just like photos
  • freeform posting of photos so the sizing is handled internally - both the main photo and the thumbnails

I’ll not promise that the new enhancements will be available to the public as it might need some more tuning/tweaking to the installation and I have burnt my fingers for giving things out free where people expect to help them each and every minute. So, I will reserve the right to just release this basic version and decide what to do with the advanced version.

A Sidenote - Why is the theme named Nishita!

This theme started off as just a Photo Blog, later on, I decided to dedicate it to Nishita, my sweet niece. If you’re interested here she goes - Nishita’s Photos and Nishita’s Blog (both maintained by the Oinam family members)

UPDATE

I’m looking for interested developer who want to be part of this Theme Project, so we can enhance it and make it much better.

  1. Hi, it seems to be broken right now. No images are visible?

  2. Fixed! Cmod Issue.

  3. Can I have one of those free Flickr pro accounts?

  4. What a gorgeous photoblog theme!!

  5. Thanks April!

  6. Wow! I haven’t been this tempted to start a second blog in a long time. You have really good design sensibilities.

  7. Hi.
I liked this blog and plugins. Can you tell me the plugins you use for it? I liked the “subsribe rss” too.
    Thanks.

  8. Let me chime in likewise. The theme is gorgeous in that the menu items are understated but logically organized and the layout really pushes the focus to the photo, which pops.

    Great work.

  9. Dave, thanks for your kind words.

    Marco Zugaib,
The plugin used, install instructions are in the ReadMe
The Subscribe RSS is maintained by Feedburner

    Joseph, Thanks a lot.

That said, I hope you continue to support and make updates to this theme, I’ll use it forever if that’s the case. :)

  11. Thanks Vince for using the theme for your photos. I’ll definitely update the theme as I go on and this blog article and the Forum Discussion will be the place to keep a tap on. Of course, you can watch over the comment on this article through CommentFul

  12. I’ve used this theme for my photos and I like it.
    Thanks and great job! :)

  13. Thanks Ramos, thanks for using the theme and yes, I like your photos specially the 2 fishes at the right-bottom of the page!

  14. Nice work! After some tweaking, I can now post photos from flickr by hitting the “blog this” button into my blog. But until I can think of a fix, I can only post them in width of 500px.

Here is how I do that:
    1. Install the theme and the CQS plugin as usual.
    2. Go to the blog setting page of flickr, and setup the blog API thing as instructed.
    3. In the layout setting page, edit the layout to your liking.
    4. Get posting!

    To post:
    1. Hit the “Blog This” button in the flickr photo page.
    2. Type the Title and content as usual.
    3. Hit “Post”.
    4. In the wordpress “edit post” -> excerpt box, paste the URL of the square thumbnail pf the photo.(Get that from the “all size” page of the photo)
    5. Hit save.

Once again, thanks for the great theme!

  15. Herbal Lemon,

That is great. I’ve been meaning to do that myself but was thinking of doing an easy way for others to get to it. Btw, for the photo size thingy, I can write a small PHP module in the index/individual page to do a proportional resize of 720 (width) which means that it will always be 720px in width. This should be my next task/upgrade for Nishita.

Thanks again for the great tip on the Flickr Image Blog post.

  16. For that width issue, the problem is that the image generated by the flickr blog API is 500px, along with other smaller sizes. Therefore, we can’t simply set the width to 720px.

  17. Well, I did not realize the fact that you cannot do more than 500 through the API though Flickr has other higher resolutions (if you have your photos to that resolution) and thus I was assuming you can do it. In worst cast scenario, one can always go to “All Sizes” and pick your desired Image URL for the higher resolution Images.

  18. Thank you for this gorgeous theme! Just what i was looking for. I used it for my travel photoblog and it looks great!

  19. Seelab, Thanks for using the theme.

  20. Hey hey I’m using Nishita too, but I changed a little the colors hahahahaha
blue to green and white to dark grey

  21. Hi, thanks for sharing such a great photoblog theme.I am using it right now and changed the color..Its great for displaying my photos..Merci beaucoup!

  22. Have you wrote the PHP module to resize the image to 720px yet?

It would be a great advance for the theme.

  23. Not yet about the auto-resize. I’ve been super busy. I would love if somebody can do that for me.

  24. We’ve added your theme to our collection of free WordPress themes. Great job man!

  25. Hi, I’m also using your theme. Thanks a lot. It’s a good theme.

  26. I’d really like to use something similar to this for a blog, but I want to use it with my flickr account like you do.

I’ve been trying to learn php, but I don’t think it I’ll get anywhere without someone teaching me.

I think the best way to use this with flickr would be to use a similar script to BlogThis. (http://www.keditasmasi.com/blogthis-for-wordpress/)

It would need to use the flickr API to get the image and post the medium, large, or original size photo to the Post box, then get the square or thumbnail size and post it to an excerpt box (which currently doesn’t exist), and maybe get the photo title to use as the post title. It seems like it should be easy, but I need to get some lessons in php.

  27. Adam, we’re planning to have Flickr interactivity in upcoming version of the theme. We do have the plan but was not part of the version 1.0 release.

  28. Hi!
I like the theme but not the pop-up comments. I will adapt that. I also changed the archive page so that the thumbnail size which is offerd by wordpress upload can be changed…

    Thanks for the good work!

  29. Thank you for the excellent theme!

  30. Thanks for designing such a great theme. I’ve tweaked it to be more of a ticker style site than a photo gallery and I really love its simplicity.

  31. Brajeshwar, nice and wide collection of photos. I am really tempted to see all your Flickr collection. Thank you for sharing. Congratulations !!!

  32. Adam, weââ¬â¢re planning to have Flickr interactivity in upcoming version of the theme. We do have the plan but was not part of the version 1.0 release.

It’s gonna be awesome! I’ll be waiting for this..

  33. Hey,
    I love what you’e doing!
Don’t ever change and best of luck.

    Raymon W.

  34. I can’t figure out how to add a Search form/button to this template. Any ideas?

    Thanks

  35. There are no search templates at this time. However, it is coming in the next update/version.

  36. Hail all

How I can change avatar in this forum?

  37. @Mary James - Which forum are you talking about?

  38. Thanks for this theme, surely use it in my Web.

  39. Thanks for the nice theme!

    Best regards.

  40. I found your site searching for “wordpress photo blog themes.” I’m currently looking for a good photoblog theme for my site at labster.net. I like the idea of having multiple posts/photos on the front page. I actually really like the theme here. Is this theme available?

    Thanks,

    Daniel

  41. You are on th theme’s article, look above, read the article and download the theme!

  42. very cool . ñ like it. thanks

  43. Hello. Evidently WordPress 2.3 has come out. Does it support Nishita?

  44. @Brad. Yes as there are no direct hooks to the WP Core. However, I haven’t tested it well except for the working copy on my Localhost.

  45. Brajeshwar,
I was going through all wordpress themes for a photoblog theme & was stuck on your theme. its really great & thanks a tonne for putting it out for us. Like “R” i was uncomfortable with the pop-up comments feature, but hey you’ve served it in a platter & thanks for it.

However I have a couple of suggestions, that I (& other users) will be obliged to see you incorporate in future releases of your theme.,
    (i) the ‘Mosaic’ feature of http://www.defx.de is really cool & would like to see that with your theme.
(ii) to be able to customise the widgets

  46. Yes, I do have some good plans for future releases of Nishita Photoblog Wordpress themes and thanks for the suggestions.

  47. Hello,
I have Nishita in my photoblog, and I get the “mosaic” feature.
You can see the feature on my Photoblog.
    For any questions, mail me.

  48. Hi Jesus (hmm, I’m replying to God),

I don’t see it there on your site. I would like to see how you do it? Do you have a direct URL to the Mosaic feature?

  49. Yuo can choose any of the categories to see a mosaic of images available on that category. For example:
    http://www.retroanuncios.com/?cat=19 or http://www.retroanuncios.com/?cat=4

    I think that its a mosaic…

    Bye.

  50. oh, I thought you were able to do a Mosaic something like how we usually get Photos Mosaic.

  51. However, it is still cool and I’d be glad if you can share the trick with other users here. Just in case, some of them wish to do that. If that is nice enough and easy to implement without the need of an additional plugin, I might as well put it as a feature for the next release.

  52. Sorry for the delay of my response. I have no time…
Of course. I´m glad to share the trick of my mosaic in http://www.retroanuncios.com (click on categories):
On te archive.php file, yo must change:

    <div id=”post-” class=”post clearfix”>

    <a href=”" title=”Enlace a ””>

    <a href=”" rel=”bookmark” title=”Enlace a ””>

    for this:

    <div id=”post-” class=”post-body”>

    <a href=”" title=”””>

Obviously, yo can add the title, time, or any other info that you like. In my case, i dont want any info. I want only the thumbnail.
If you see the code, the only change is “class=”post clearfix”" by the “class=”post-body”".
Now, you can format the stile of the thumbs (size, margin, align, …) in the style.css file…
i hope that this may help other people.
    More changes on http://www.retroanuncios.com
Brajeshwar, congratulations for this theme. I´m waiting the next version… Good luck!

  53. Love the theme. Question about clipthephotos. What I would love to do is to not just be able to post photos from flickr but also snippets from anywhere on the web to this blog. Is that possible? Maybe a single click bookmarklet that works in this fashion: on the target page select what you want posted to your blog (basically text) and then click the bookmarklet. it should open a background window/tab - post it to your blog and then close itself down. That way - i am rapidly posting things to my blog - a single click process. It would be cool if these posts got tagged to a specific category (unsorted) so i can pull them up later and tag them appropriately.

  54. am using this theme as well http://jacobsfotos.com/2/ was looking for a descent theme for my fotos for a long time. will keep this one. thanks a lot.

  55. I was wondering - in Options > Reading I have it set to show ten posts, however for the last post on the first page, there is the “Previous” button, and when I click on that button, it will only show a single post, not ten more. Is there a way to correct this?

My archive is all buggered up and I don’t know how to fix it, and this would be an acceptable compromise.

    Thanks,
    -Eric

  56. Just wanted to say thanks for the theme. I’m using it on the site above and it is great. Many thanks!
    Andy

  57. How do I add a StumbleUpon link to my posts?

StumbleUpon’s site says to modify the single.php file, however I cannot find that file in the contents of Nishita.

  58. hi brajeshwar…. thanks for your vista wallpaper, I like….

  59. I can’t get the_tags() to work inside the archives-page.php loop, does anyone know how to get it to work? I would like to show the tags for each post in the archives page.. Thanks :)

  60. I resolved the problem, just had to change the Loop to use “the_post()” and it works. :)

  61. Hi there, I have been trying to configure your very excellent “Nishita” theme. I’m having a problem with step 2: Install the Custom Query String plugin and Activate the same. the link it seems to be dead - http://drunkenmonkey.org/user/archive/. I guess the plugin is important! Is there an alternative I cold use?

Best photoblog theme I have found so far! thanks

  62. @Ouch
Yes, the plugin is important at least for this version of the theme. I’m however planning to make the theme plugin independent.

Download Custom Query from my backup download section.

  63. lovely, thanks for the help!

  64. Hi Brajeshwar,

I am new to blogging and really love your Nashita theme for photoblogs. I have 3 questions:

    1) I read your comment which said you are going to create a new version plugin independent… do you know when the new version will be released?

    2) If I download and use this current version and plugin, does that mean that I will have to start all over with my blog if I want to use the new version of the theme?

    3) Will I be able to put video if I use this theme?

Sorry if I sound stupid. Like I said I am new blogging.

    Thanks for your time!
    Melanie

  65. @Melanie
    > I am new to blogging and really love your Nashita theme for photoblogs.

    Thanks

    > 1) I read your comment which said you are going to create a new version plugin independent
    > do you know when the new version will be released?

Not sure and I’ve not set a deadline myself.
    REASONS:

    • tied up with my startup and it really taking a toll on me.
    • still unable to find an economical but (excellent) designer whom I can ask for help to do what I want with the next version. I’m even willing to share the footer credential with a designer who might be interested. Well, that footer link is a big traffic generator and I know what I’m offering

    > 2) If I download and use this current version and plugin,
    > does that mean that I will have to start all over with my blog
    > if I want to use the new version of the theme?

No, I’ll make sure they’re are backward compatible and upgrade should be as easy as it should be. I’m a die-hard fan of “Keeping things Simple”.

    > 3) Will I be able to put video if I use this theme?

Yes but limited to Youtube or other video sides that allows you to embed videos for now.
The good thing is I’ve already chalked plans for the next version to have its own styled video player built-in.

    > Sorry if I sound stupid. Like I said I am new blogging.

Those were pretty reasonable and good questions.

  66. Thanks for answering my questions! Your time and efforts are appreciated, Brajeshwar!

    Blessings,
    Melanie
